Trekking Riaño Mountain Range. Discover the south face of Picos de Europa

The Southern side of the Picos de Europa may have a different climate to the Cantabrian seaward side and, along with the Western Massif, approached from the South, offers many different perspectives.  The first part of the trip takes you into the heart of the Riaño mountains south of the Picos.

There, you will immediately feel the expansive grandeur of these Alpine-like peaks mirrored in the still water of the lakes beneath them.  The villages, too, are small, intimate and pretty.  There are very few hill walkers and tourists in this area, adding to that sense of tranquillity that will make this tour an exceptional experience.

Itinerary and details

Itinerary description

Book your Trekking in the Riaño Mountain Range. Climbing to the Gilbo, Yordas, Cruz del Mampodre and Peña Prieta Peaks. Small groups and qualified guides.

Day 1. Arrival at Boca de Huergano.
Description:

Arrival at San Vicente de la Barquera. Transfer to Boca de Huergano. Dinner and accommodation at Hotel Tierra de la Reina in Boca de Huergano.

Day 2. ASCENT TO YORDAS PEAK. 11 KM +760M/-760M
Description:

Breakfast. The Yordas Peak (1,964m) is a classic hike in the Riaño mountains. The panoramic views of this route are unforgettable: the entire Mampodre Massif, the Western and Central Massifs of the Picos de Europa, the Palentina Mountain, the Riaño reservoir, etc. In addition, we will cross the San Pelayo Valley and La Tendeña beech forest. The first part of the route is relatively easy, but the assault on the summit is challenging, with 300m of a gradient in just 1 km. Once at the top and depending on the weather, we can descend the south face or return by the same path. Dinner and accommodation at Hotel Tierra de la Reina in Boca de Huergano.

Day 3. ASCENT TO PEÑA PRIETA. 19KM +1,250m/-1,250m
Description:

Breakfast. Peña Prieta (2,536m) is one of the most spectacular and, at the same time, crucial high mountain areas in northern Spain. A set of peaks, valleys and lakes of glacial origin form the headwaters of the rivers Esla, Yuso, Carrión and Riofrío, straddling the provinces of León, Palencia and Santander, respectively. We will leave from the town of Llánaves de la Reina and cross the beautiful Naranco valley until we reach the top of Peña Prieta. We will return through the Cubil del Can, the Tarna Plain, and the Naranco Valley. Dinner and accommodation at Hotel Tierra de la Reina in Boca de Huergano.

Day 4. MAMPODRE MASSIF. ASCENTO TO PEÑA LA CRUZ DE MAMPODRE. 10KM +1.100M -1.100M
Description:

Breakfast. Ascension to the highest peak of the Mampodre Massif from the town of Maraña, going up the Fuentona stream and descending towards the valley along the Valverde stream.

Mampodre is a massif whose importance is based on the glacial modelling landscape that ice and snow have created in the mountains of Valdeburón and Puebla de Lillo.

The Geological Reserve of the Mampodre Glacier Complex is considered an attractive name for studying and understanding the geological processes transforming the landscape to give rise to the natural environment we know today. Dinner and accommodation at the Tierras de la Reina Hotel.

Day 5. ASCENT TO GILBO PEAK. 10 Km +600m/-600m
Description:

Breakfast. We will finish this amazing hiking trip, reaching the iconic summit of Gilbo Peak. As we approach the upper section of the climb, the track becomes more complex, with some scrambling. However, from the top, the views are fantastic. Below are the lesser peaks and the expansive lakes that form one of the most significant reservoirs in Spain. The route starts at the lake, ascending above the beech and oak forest to the emblematic peaks above.

After eating, we finish this spectacular trekking in one of the most unknown areas of Spain, and we will surely return to continue discovering new routes.
