La Senda de Camille Hut-to-Hut Western Pyrenees

LA SENDA DE CAMILLE

A trek through the best places of the Western Pyrenees.

Following in the footsteps of Camille, one of the last native bears who had his natural habitat in this area, you will discover a unique part of the Pyrenean mountain range.

It is also possible to ascent to any of the beautiful peaks such as Petrachema, Castillo d'Acher, Bisaurín or Acué and visit places such as the lakes of Estanés and Arlet, Valle of the Sarrios, Bosque de las Hayas, the Aspe Gorge or the Lescún circus. In short, enjoy the natural wealth of these valleys.

The path of Camille is a hiking trip with an average of six hours of walking per stage, which requires good physical condition and mountain experience walking for several days with a heavy backpack.

Itinerary and details

Itinerary description

Camille's Path. A trek through the best places of the Western Pyrenees. You will discover a unique part of the Pyrenean mountain range.

Day 1. Stage 1. Somport – Arlet. 18,9 Km +1.150m -780 m
Description:

Meet up with the guide at Somport Mountain Pass. Those who arrive by public transportation can be collected at Jaca or Canfranc. We begin this amazing trek entering the French slope, with its dense forests, shepherds' huts of sheep, and the fantastic cheese of the country. The amphitheatre of Aspe and the valley of Espelunguera are two of the most beautiful points of this stage, without disregard for the place where the refuge is, the ibón de Arlet, with impressive views of the Midi d 'Ossau. Also, when you are in the refuge, in 20 minutes, you can reach the border and, if the afternoon is clear, take a look at Aguas Tuertas, an impressive corner of the Western Valleys Natural Park. Dinner and accommodation in Arlet Refuge.

Day 2. Stage 2. Arlet – Lescun. 19,5 Km +520m -1.640m
Description:

Breakfast. We will walk almost parallel to the border of the two slopes of the Pyrenees. The ports of Saoubathou and Lo Palo have been travelled by man throughout history to go to work or to flee the wars. These steps sometimes took the lives of walkers if the escape was made in winter, but they also witnessed the solidarity of anonymous neighbours from both sides, who risked their lives to help those fleeing. The descent into the valley of Lescun plunges us into the quiet life of the Béarn people. The steep summits of the Circ de Lescun contrast with the intense green of the meadows dotted with houses, "bordas", and cattle grazing. Dinner and accommodation in Lescun (Camping Lauzart)

Day 3. Stage 3. Lescun – Linza. 16,6 Km +1.290m -790m
Description:

The stage starts with a paved road, but the impressive view of the Circ de Lescun, with the solid rocks of "Les Billaires", "Mesa de los Tres Reyes", and "Petrachema" will delight the way. In the plain of Ansabere, we can take the last chance to buy French cheese. From there, the climb to "Las Agujas" will require more effort. We enter Spain again and descend towards Linza among hundred-year-old beech trees. Dinner and accommodation in Linza Refuge.

Day 4. Stage 4. Linza – Selva de Oza. 15,3 Km +800m -1.050m
Description:

Breakfast. Just in front of the mountain hut, take the path to Paso del Caballo and follow towards Anzotiello, Mallo Gorreta, Quimboa, and other summits that look like insurmountable barriers. On the way down to Guarinza, we will see different megalithic vestiges. Once in Selva de Oza, we can enjoy a cold beer under the majestic beech tree of the wooden cantine. Transfer to Gabardito Refuge. Dinner and accommodation in Gabardito Refuge.

Day 5. Stage 5. Gabardito – Lizara. 9,6 Km +695m -550m (+700m with the ascent to Bisaurin)
Description:

Breakfast. This is the shortest stage if you don't climb Bisaurin. From Gabardito to Lízara is approximately a four-hour walk, plus an extra three hours if you make the ascent to Bisaurin. This is a worthwhile climb if you can do it, as it's' the area's highest summit and has spectacular views. Dinner and accommodation in Lizara Refuge.

Day 6. Stage 6. Lizara – Somport. 17,4 Km +1.070m -980m
Description:

Breakfast. The last track is one of the most beautiful stages since the Valle de los Sarrios and the Ibón de Estanés become overwhelmed. It is not too hard, but it is long. You start going up around 2 hours, then walk through the Paul de Bernera and the Valle de los Sarrios, go down to the ibón and cross the Bosque de las Hayas towards the port of Somport. Transfer to Canfranc or Jaca and end of services.
